Elle Smith was crowned ‘Miss America’, when the first transgender part of the contest ended shortly

Miss America, up to this point, is still a beauty queen.

Elle Smith, who entered the beauty pageant as “Miss Kentucky,” won the Miss USA crown on Monday night.

Currently, she will represent the US to participate in the Miss Universe pageant in Israel. Scheduled for December 12.

According to NPR, one factor that helped Smith get there was that she wowed the judges in the swimsuit competition. She is said to have rejected the idea that wearing a bikini would harm her in her day job, which is a journalist in Louisville, NPR noted.

Smith’s victory was remarkable because to win the crown, she had to beat the first transgender Miss America contestant.

Kataluna Enriquez, a biological man who earlier this year won the title of “Miss Nevada”, was eliminated before the final 16 Miss America contestants were selected.

It’s not clear why Enriquez hasn’t progressed further.

NBC News reported that the Miss Universe pageant network, including the Miss USA pageant, has been allowing transgender people to participate since 2012.

Enriquez was supposed to be the second transgender in the Miss Universe pageant. Spain’s Angela Ponce was the first in 2018.

NBC News noted that the organizers of the Miss America pageant, which is a separate organization and is believed to be better known of the two pageants, did not respond to a request for comment on whether “women transgender or non-pure individuals” can compete in its events.

According to NBC, the Miss America pageant, at least in 2018, is open only to “natural-born women”.

The rules governing participation posted on the Miss America website on Wednesday contain a brief sentence for the standards that fall under the category “sex. ”

It says: “Candidate is female.
