‘Du’ director found masturbation scenes ‘creepy’

Penn Badgley had to do multiple takes of his masturbation scenes for You, the actor confessed.
The 35-year-old Netflix star revealed on his podcast, Podcrushed, that whenever he filmed a masturbation scene, directors called him too “creepy.”
“Any time I did a masturbation scene … I always got a note to make it less scary,” the Gossip Girl graduate revealed to co-hosts Sophie Ansari and Nava Kavelin, as well as his former CW co-star Chace Crawford, who guest-starred on the episode.
“They’re like, ‘Close your eyes or go faster or slower.’ I’m like, ‘What? This man is the damn king who murders people and he masturbates in the street,” Badgley said. “‘You’re saying I’m making it scary? How come I’m the one making it scary?’”
Badgley said the director pointed out that open eyes are part of the problem.
“I just remember not wanting to close my eyes and the director approaching me,” he explained. “He said, ‘Dude, I think you need to close your eyes.'”
However, Badgley noted that chilling is “the f–king point” of his character, Joe Goldberg, a serial killer.

“That’s just the weird line we always walk on our show. Examining toxicity in sex culture while trying to be sexy,” he said. “You read it. It’s actually kind of funny or scary, but it serves the story.”
“And then you discover in front of a group of people with a camera on your face, knowing that millions of people will most likely see that you’re faking masturbation,” he added.
The Netflix thriller ended its third season last year and filmed its fourth installment in London.

Season 3 co-star Tati Gabrielle opened up about what it’s like to film intimate scenes with Badgley on Page Six last October.
The 26-year-old – who plays Marienne Bellamy – admitted she “freaked out” while filming her first sex scene.
“I was so nervous,” said the Chilling Adventures of Sabrina actress. “I told Penn up front, ‘Hey, I’ve never done that.’ And he said, ‘It’s going to be okay.’”
“We had a great intimacy coordinator on set. So we could go through everything and get a good picture [of what to do],” she continued. “It became more of a dance, like a choreographed dance, than it had to feel that nervousness and be awkward or weird.”
