Richarlison was one of the main highlights of Sunday’s defeat at Crystal Palace when Benitez replaced him early in the second half as his side led 2-0, leading to dissent from traveling fans.
Benitez said after the game that the Brazil international had developed a calf problem and a subsequent scan revealed a tear which the club said would rule him out for “a number of weeks”.
Last season’s top scorer Dominic Calvert-Lewin has been out of action since August with a thigh problem and although he is edging closer to a return, the loss of Richarlison and Townsend to a pivotal moment at a pivotal moment in the season is a big blow to Benitez, the team had just picked up four points. Townsend suffered a minor fracture in his foot during Sunday’s game and his injury will be assessed by the experts but midfielder Abdoulaye Doucoure has just returned from a similar problem and he is out for five weeks.
In addition, captain Seamus Coleman suffered bone bruises and soft tissue damage during the match against Palace and will be evaluated in the coming days.
Benitez was without center back Tom Davies (knee) and defender Yerry Mina, who lasted just 31 minutes on his return from a two-month break before suffering a calf problem.
