Dominic West on recreating Prince Charles’ ‘bizarre’ break-dancing video in The Crown’s credits scene

Dominic West has explained how he came to recreate King Charles’ ‘bizarre’ break-dancing moment The crown.

The British actor plays the monarch, then Prince Charles, in the fifth season of the Netflix period drama.

Episode five of the series revolves around the work of his charity, The Prince’s Trust, and ends with a surprising credits sequence of Charles awkwardly break-dancing at an event.

Appears on Jimmy Kimmel Live On Monday (November 28), West explained that the scene was inspired by a real-life video he recorded while “researching” for the role.

The cable star said he was later shown the footage by his co-star Olivia Williams, who plays Camilla Parker-Bowles.

“There’s footage of Prince Charles dancing for a Prince’s Trust cause on YouTube,” West explained. “He’s in a youth center and he meets a lot of kids that he helps at The Prince’s Trust and they started break dancing and they drew him into dancing with them.”

West added that the king was often “proud” of his dancing skills, continuing, “He takes his dancing very seriously and [with] this thing, he gets on it. He dances with these two children.”

The clip was then shown with the original dance, with West laughing as Kimmel described it as “quite possibly one of the weirdest things I’ve ever seen in my life.”

“I have a feeling if this happened after the advent of YouTube, this would be the most popular video in the history of the world,” the late-night host said.

West replied, “It’s so bizarre because it mixed late ’70s disco, if you do that pretty stiffly [dance]. He takes it very seriously and you have to admire that.”

He then explained that it took “quite a long time” to learn how to breakdance like Charles.

“[The choreographer] said: “The difficulty is that there is no rhythm. It’s totally arrhythmic. The problem I found was getting too caught up in rhythm, which was a fatal flaw… It’s much harder to dance out of rhythm. He does it brilliantly.”

West proceeded to perform a Charles-style break dance for Kimmel and the cheering crowd.
