Doctor Strange in the multiverse of madness Screenwriter Michael Waldron has addressed erroneous fan speculation that Tom Cruise would star in the film as Iron Man.
Ahead of the film’s May 6 worldwide theatrical release, Marvel fans claimed they spotted the shadowy character of Cruise as Iron Man in the trailers – a character played by Robert Downey Jr. for over a decade.
In conversation with Rolling Stone magazine, published Monday (May 9), Waldron said he agreed with the Marvel Cinematic Universe fans who thought so top gun The actor was set to play an alternate Iron Man in the multiverse, but that was never an option for the Doctor Strange sequel.
Speaking to the publication, Waldron revealed the theory that the 59-year-old would be playing a variant of Iron Man Doctor Strange 2 “was totally made up” by the fans.
“Yeah, that was totally made up,” Waldron said Rolling Stone, adding, “I mean, there’s no edited footage of Tom Cruise!”
However, Waldron revealed that he asked Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige if there was a chance they could cast Cruise “because that would be so cool.”
“I love Tom Cruise and at one point I said to Kevin, ‘Can we get Tom Cruise’s Iron Man?'” Waldron explained, adding that Cruise’s schedule didn’t match the filming dates for Multiverse of Madness.
When asked what Feige answered him, Waldron said, “Well, I mean, [Cruise] lap Impossible Mission 7 and 8.”
He also confirmed that no one from the studio had actually approached the 59-year-old about a cameo in the film, saying it was never an option “due to availability”.

Benedict Cumberbatch, who plays the film’s title character, Dr. Steven Strange previously joked that Cruise “is in every scene if you haven’t seen the trailer.”
“It’s the biggest kept secret,” he quipped in an interview with The Indian Express.
