Inspired by a story by Hans Christian Anderson of the same name, Disney’s The little mermaid was hailed as an animated film classic. The premise of the story turns around Ariel, a mermaid princess who rescues a human sailor and falls in love. To follow her heart, she seeks out the ocean’s most feared villain, Ursula the Sea Witch, in her quest to turn her fins into legs so she can be human.
But like most villains, there’s a victim and a sneaky catch. Ariel must give up her voice and make her human prince fall in love with her within three days. If she fails, she turns back into a mermaid and gives her soul to Ursula.
Ursula is as terrifying as her name suggests. She’s loud and swaggering, and her half-human, half-octopus form makes her a huge screen presence. She realizes that by making this deal with Ariel, she has the bargaining power to get King Triton’s trident and power in exchange for his daughter’s soul.
Ursula then takes steps to ensure that Ariel does not make her human prince fall in love with her, including using Ariel’s voice and assuming her human form to become direct competition for the mermaid princess. You must watch the animated adventure unfold.
Who inspired Ursula to her look?
According to the AV club, Ursula took many forms before animators and film producers settled on the octopus-based sea witch. Early renditions had depicted her as a giant, evil manta ray, inspired by Joan Collins. Another idea of a “beautiful but deadly” scorpion-like fish was also scrapped.
An animator, Rob Minkoff, began sketching an oversized and slightly “vampire” creature with effects strikingly similar to drag queen Divine. The eye makeup, jewelry and quasi-glam sketch originally featured a shark tail and a pink mohican. But when renditions changed, the octopus villain came to life, and the rest is history. Divine didn’t actually get to play Ursula but admitted they would have loved to play the role.
