Emily often shares tips on how to help kids have a healthy relationship with food, and recognizes that parents can have a hard time when their kids don’t eat dinner.

She captioned the post: “Three things to say when your child says, ‘But I don’t want that. “

In the video, Emily explains how to encourage them to eat foods they don’t want and how never to cook them a separate meal, react negatively, or eat in a personal way.

A negative reaction when they say no can reinforce their refusal to try their dinner.

She lists three things you could say instead: “Maybe next time you can try.

“You can decide what’s on your plate.

“I know you’ll try it when you’re ready.”

Some parents in the comments have suggested Emily’s advice means you’re a lazy parent who doesn’t cook food your child likes.

One user wrote: “That’s all you’re doing. If you really care about your kids’ well-being, you’ll make sure they’re happy with what they like.”

In a later video, she explains the context behind saying these three phrases to kids who refuse to eat dinner and why it’s not lazy.

“There seems to be this view that if you don’t feed your kids separately you’re starving them or you’re forcing them to eat,” she explains.

“It doesn’t have to be.”

Emily said there are definitely times when she asks for private meals, and at her home, she does it every Friday.

She explains that she sees it as a benefit when introducing new foods to children and new flavors, even if it means they may not like it the first time.

Emily adds that you may not be doing this daily or even weekly but your child can surprise you and try some new foods as you encourage them more using these phrases.

Other parents agreed with Emily, one mother writing: “This approach has changed the way dinner feels for us. No more arguing! I’ve decided what to do tonight but you can decide what to eat.”

“I have four kids. I say – every meal isn’t necessarily our favorite, but this is today’s meal.” Reviewed another mother.

A third wrote: “I always say, ‘Dinner will be here for you if you change your mind. “I don’t have the energy to argue with them lol.”
