It has been announced that a multi-year contract has been concluded between Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings filmmakers Destin Daniel Cretton and Disney companies Marvel Studios and Hulu’s Onyx Collective for a series of MCU movies on Disney+. The announcement of the deal includes Disney’s confirmation that Cretton will return to write and direct the sequel to Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.
Reported by Deadline, the new deal comes after the blockbuster success of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, highlighted Simu Liu, Duong Tu Quynh, Awkwafina, and Leung Chiu Wai, and saw the film earn $94.6 million on the opening day of Labor Day, setting a box office record for the opening of Labor Day. In its first week of release, the film is the highest-grossing domestic release to date with $224.5 Million and has since earned nearly $432 Million worldwide. The film represents the first film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe to be taken on by an Asian and predominantly Asian actor, with its sequel joining the growing list of Marvel content already in the works. The announcement is expected to launch in the next few years.
