Deputy Jennifer Chavis: Funeral held at Fountain of Praise Church for District 7 deputy killed in accident on S. Sam Houston Parkway

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) – On Wednesday, loved ones will say a final goodbye to a member of our law enforcement community who was killed in a fiery crash earlier this month.

This has happened far too often in the Houston area. District 7 Deputy Police Officer Jennifer Chavis’s family is laying her to rest in Southwest Houston, and the public is invited to come out.

Chavis’ family will hold a private visitation at 10 a.m. at the Fountain of Praise Church at 13950 Hillcroft Avenue. After that, around 11 a.m., anyone who wishes to pay their respects can attend the public viewing.

The funeral service begins at 12:30 p.m

Chavis was killed while attempting to pull over a suspected drunk driver, identified as 36-year-old Adolfo Serrano, on the South Sam Houston Parkway in Fondren, according to the sheriff’s office. Serrano allegedly crashed into her squad car, which caught fire and killed her.

Chavis had been with Revier 7 for a year and a half. The 32-year-old is survived by a husband, a 4-year-old son and an 11-year-old nephew, whom she also raised.

Serrano is charged with the involuntary manslaughter of a peace officer by drug poisoning and is currently being held without bail. Prosecutors said they can only do so for so long and are formulating a plan for how to move forward.

“The Texas constitution only lets you not hold bail for 60 days. At that point, we’re going to be asking for a very substantial bail,” said Sean Teare, chief of Harris County’s Vehicular Crimes Division.
