Denis Shapovalov shouts “shut the f–k up” to the audience at the Italian Open

Denis Shapovalov lost his composure.

The 23-year-old shouted “Shut up” loudly to the crowd watching his Italian Open first-round match after they started booing him. Fans were frustrated by Shapovalov’s ongoing feuds with the chair umpire.

Shapovalov struggled to stay in the second set of the match against Italy’s Lorenzo Sonego after winning the first in the tiebreak. The referee had already warned the Canadian not to cross the net; Shapovalov lost it when he was given a point penalty at a critical moment, causing him to lash out.

“I just showed you the mark,” Shapovalov yelled at the referee. A tournament official was called in to mitigate further escalation.

The referee told Shapovalov, “That’s just the rule,” and the ace quickly fired back, “No, it’s not, it’s stupid.”

As Shapovalov continued to verbally battle the referee, fans lost patience with his antics as they cheered on their compatriot. They loudly booed the world No. 16, which caused Shapovalov to flare up, cursing in the stands.
