Democrats dissing Mayor Adams could lead to the next “Rudy Giuliani”: Al Sharpton

Rev. Al Sharpton on Saturday blamed other Democrats who blame Mayor Adams’ tough crime policies for the party’s key losses in the New York midterm election and warned they are allowing the next Rudy Giuliani could.

Speaking to 100 people at his National Action Network headquarters in Harlem, Sharpton said he was “really mad” at progressive Democrats who accused the more moderate Adams of helping Republicans win the election simply by speaking openly about rising crime rates.

“I saw the same distortion done to David Dinkins when he was mayor of New York [city’s] black first [mayor].” said Sharpton.

“And I see the same trend in the media and some who describe themselves as progressives who have attacked Dinkins with misinformation – who are attacking this mayor.

“Some of us in the black community have taken that decision — saying David Dinkins has been playing too much tennis like there’s something wrong; that he shouldn’t have worn a tuxedo like he should have gone to a formal affair in blue jeans.”

“And we accidentally crushed him so much in our passion that we got Rudy Giuliani,” the reverend added, referring to the Republican who unseated Dinkins in the 1993 mayoral race.

Adams told the audience he felt the party’s infighting and power grabs led the public to believe the Democrats had no real plan to deal with crime — to the GOP’s benefit.

“It’s time for us to get into a room together,” he said.
