Democrats and Republicans alike say the US is moving in the wrong direction: poll

Americans of all political persuasions are frustrated with the state of the nation, with 85% saying the country is going in the wrong direction — including nearly eight in 10 Democrats, according to a new poll.

The deep discontent is reflected in both parties, with 92% of Republicans saying the economy is doing poorly — and 78% of Democrats saying the same, up 35 percentage points since March, according to an Associated Press/NORC poll released Wednesday .

As the nation prepares to vote in a midterm election that will determine which party controls Congress, President Biden’s approval rating continues to plummet.

Overall, 60% of Americans disapprove of the work Biden does in the White House, including 73% of independents.

More than a quarter of Democrats (27%) oppose Biden, while less than three-quarters (72%) approve of him.

Dorothy Vaudo, 66, of North Carolina, said she voted for Biden in 2020 but plans to switch parties this year.

“I’m a Democrat, so I had to vote Democrat, but that’s going to change,” she told the Associated Press.

Soaring food and gas prices, the highest rate of inflation in four decades, and the ongoing impact of the COVID-19 pandemic have weighed heavily on Americans, and they are expressing displeasure with the president.

While a majority in the AP-NORC poll acknowledges Biden’s response to the pandemic — 53% agree — Americans took the president to task for his handling of the economy.

More than two-thirds of Americans (69%) disagree with the White House’s economic policies, including 93% Republicans, 84% Independents and 43% Democrats.

The president also gets low marks for his approach to gun policy, which 62% of Americans disagree with, including 91% Republicans, 71% independents, and more than a third of all Democrats (34%).

Chuck McClain, 74, of Las Vegas, said Biden is doing “the best thing he can” but added he couldn’t say “he’s doing a good job” while blaming Democrats for failing their majorities in Congress to have exploited.

In the end, McClain, who describes himself as a loyal Democrat, feels ignored by Washington amid gas and food prices, the ongoing war in Ukraine, and blatant political divisions across the country.

“My wife and I are very frustrated with where the country is going and we don’t have much hope that the political ending will be any better,” he said.

The survey surveyed 1,953 Americans between June 23 and 27.

It has an error rate of plus or minus 4 percentage points.
