DENVER (KDVR) – Broncos . star wide receiver Demaryius Thomas was found dead in the police bathroom on Thursday night after a 911 call was allegedly “cardiac arrest related,” according to a police report obtained by Nexstar’s KDVR.
Police found Thomas around 7 p.m. after a 911 call from a man who has not been identified as a resident of Thomas’s home.
Police were informed in writing that Thomas was “not conscious and not breathing”. When the officers arrived, they had to push a gate to enter the house.
When officers entered the home, they found Thomas lying on his back under the shower. The report said he had obvious signs of severe pain, indicating that he was dead.
LaTonya Bonseigneur, a first cousin who grew up with Thomas, told the Associated Press that the family believes he died of a seizure.
“He’s been having seizures for over a year, and we believe he had a seizure in the shower,” Bonseigneur said in a phone interview with the AP. “He was alone and a friend couldn’t keep him, so he called his driver, who had the keys because of these seizures, and he came in and found him in the shower. .”
A full report from the medical examiner has yet to be released.
Neurosurgeon, a specialist in epilepsy, scales
Dr Matthew Mian, a neurosurgeon with the Swedish Medical Center in Colorado, said: “It was a terrible and tragic surprise.
Mian specializes in epilepsy, which are repeated seizures of unknown cause. He said it affects about 1% of all people and it can happen at any age.
“I think one of the challenges with epilepsy is that we don’t always know who is suffering and in some ways it can be an invisible disorder,” he said.
Thomas has had a huge impact on and off the football field, and some in the medical world say he will continue to make a difference.
“What I have trouble with as a neurosurgeon is that although there are millions of people affected by epilepsy in the United States, many times, patients do not seek treatment. The good thing about terrible events like this, Mian adds, is that it raises awareness about the disease and in fact there are treatments for it.
Thomas’ death came almost three years after a car rollover. His injuries at the time were described as mild. Some wondered if his seizures could be connected.
“We think that traumatic brain injury, of which concussion is an example, is definitely a risk factor for epilepsy and may be directly related to epilepsy. Anything can cause a seizure: head trauma, tumors, sometimes congenital diseases that humans are born with, but the seizure itself is like an electrical storm spreading across the surface of the brain,” Mian said. speak.
But doctors say there is hope for people with seizures and epilepsy.
“It is very important to emphasize that seizures are very treatable and in some cases curable,” says Mian.
It’s not clear what treatment Thomas may have received, but seizures and epilepsy can be treated with medication or surgery.
