Defiant Volodymyr Zelenskyy vows to fight ‘beast’ Putin and warns that Russia’s NATO tyrant will want ‘more’ if Ukraine falls

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has vowed in a video message to fight Vladimir Putin and warned that the Russian president will want “more” if Ukraine falls.

Zelenskyy reiterated his pleas for the US and other countries to clear the way for Soviet-era fighter jets for his military and to enforce a no-fly zone over the country.

In the exclusive interview with ABC newsZelenskyy said through a government interpreter that Ukraine lacks air sovereignty, and that he shared the information with President Joe Biden during a phone call Monday.

Biden and other world leaders have said creating a no-fly zone would require allies to shoot down Russian planes, but Zelenskyy said Russian missiles are hitting civilian infrastructure.

The North Atlantic Treaty Organization has rejected requests for the no-fly zone, saying war with Russia is at risk.

Zelenskyy warns that Putin would not stop at Ukraine and would threaten other democratic countries.

“We are a place in Europe, a place of freedom, a zone of freedom,” he said. “When the limits of rights and freedoms are violated and trespassed, then you must protect us. Because we come first, you come second.”

Despite being offered safe exit from Ukraine, Zelenskyy said he would stay as he is the country’s democratically elected leader.

“I am sure that Ukrainians are ready to fight against Russia all their lives,” he said, speaking of the civilians who fought against Russian forces.

“We will persevere, and even if they come to all our cities, there will be riots, insurgency wars,” he said. “No one will give up our independence.”

Addressing the US in English, Zelenskyy commented that while Americans speak of freedom, the example of Ukrainians opposing Russian forces shows the importance of freedom.

“We’re not far from you,” he said. “If you see and understand how we feel… as we fight against all enemies for our freedom, support us.”
