Lorraine Kelly paid an emotional tribute to podcaster and activist Deborah James on Tuesday (10 May) on her ITV talk show.
James recently told followers she doesn’t know “how much longer I have” after being transferred to a home hospice to treat her end-stage colon cancer.
A fundraiser last day raised over £1million, with the money going to Cancer Research UK.
“I know she’s watching now, and she wants to say ‘thank you,'” Kelly said. “She’s about to hit £1million so thank you.”
James who hosted the BBC podcast You, me and the big CShe shared a message with her followers on Twitter yesterday (Monday).
“The tweet I never wanted to write,” she wrote. “The time has come to say goodbye. 5 years of preparation does not make it easy. I am in hospice care at home and spend my time surrounded by my family. Please buy me one [drink] to see me and raise vital funds.
“She’s asking everyone to buy her a drink,” Kelly said. “Well you don’t really do that, but what you do is donate to her Bowel Babe fund.”
“I watched this all morning and it really cheered me up. It’s amazing that it really is like that. I think she will definitely hit a million, fingers crossed. We will never know how many lives she saved.”
The presenter added: “The only thing is she always bounced back. I recently visited her in the hospital and she was really thin. But she was Deborah. She made everyone laugh, I just thought ‘she’s going to get back on her feet’.”
