Death of Taylor Hawkins: Foo Fighters drummer dies aged 50
Taylor Hawkins, drummer for theFoo Fighters has died at the age of 50, the legendary US rock band announced on Friday.
“The Foo Fighters family is devastated by the tragic and untimely loss of our beloved Taylor Hawkins,” the band said in a statement on Twitter.
“His musical spirit and infectious laugh will live on in all of us forever.”
“Our hearts are with his wife, children and family and we ask that their privacy be treated with the utmost respect at this unimaginably difficult time,” the statement said.
The cause of death has not yet been announced.
Tributes poured in for the drummer, and musicians and fans alike expressed their shock at his sudden death.
“Completely in disbelief at the news of Taylor Hawkins,” wrote rock band Nickelback. “Our deepest condolences go out to his family, bandmates, team, friends and everyone who has ever been touched by the music he created with @foofighters @Alanis and so many others. It’s so incredibly sad.”
“In absolute shock and disbelief at the death of Taylor Hawkins. I always admired him a lot,” wrote musician Mike Portnoy. “Amazing drummer and a gem of a guy who was always fun to be around. I am absolutely devastated…my deepest condolences to his bandmates and family.”
Born in 1972 in Fort Worth, Texas, Hawkins has been a member of the band since 1997. He is survived by his wife Alison and their three children.
The American rock band was supposed to perform there BogotaColombia, at the Estereo Picnic festival on Friday, but the concert was canceled.
The festival released a statement on Facebook confirming the band had pulled out of the three-day event due to Hawkins’ death.
“Heartbroken we are here to bring you very sad news as the Foo Fighters are unable to perform tonight due to a very serious medical situation and have canceled the remainder of their South American tour.”
The band were also among the acts scheduled to perform at the 2022 Grammy Awards on April 3.
Formed by former Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl, the band’s biggest hits include “Best of You”, “My Hero”, “Learn to Fly” and “All My Life”.
