The death of a 2-year-old girl at a Manhattan homeless shelter last year has been ruled a homicide – after an autopsy confirmed she had been taking methadone, authorities said on Friday.
The tot, identified by police as Mariya Huebler, was found unconscious and unresponsive at the animal shelter at 30 Hamilton Place in Hamilton Heights shortly before 11:45 p.m. on June 7, 2021, police officers said.
Mariya was taken to Mount Sinai Saint Luke’s Hospital where she was pronounced dead.
At the time, there were no obvious signs of trauma, authorities said.
However, police confirmed on Friday morning that the case was ruled a homicide – with a report from the city coroner showing she used methadone.
No one is in custody and the investigation was ongoing as of Friday morning, police said.
“The meaning of Mariya means loved or loved by many, as does the meaning of my name Jedidah,” the little girl’s mother posted on a GoFundMe page last year. “She was literally loved by many and touched so many people in such a short time that she has been on this earth. It just speaks to the character and awareness my daughter had at such a young age.”
“This tragedy doesn’t just have repercussions [sic] me, but many others,” she wrote. “Mariya was loved so much that it hurts to acknowledge that she is no longer with us physically. Everyone who knew me knew how much I loved my daughter, how much of a hands-on mother I was to Mariya. I still can’t believe this is real.”
