Death in Surfside Beach, Texas: Woman killed when allegedly drunk driver ran her over in sand

SURFSIDE BEACH, Texas — A woman was killed in a late-night beach accident over the holiday weekend.

According to the Surfside Beach Police Department, officers were called around 2:45 a.m. Sunday to a report of a car-pedestrian accident on the sand at Block 100 of the Bluewater Highway.

Upon arrival, officers were told the driver had fled the scene north on the beach. Officers attempted life-saving measures on the victim until paramedics arrived. The female victim was pronounced dead at the scene. Her identity has not been made public.

The driver and the vehicle were about 245 meters away on the beach. The driver was found to be in possession of ecstasy, police said, and admitted to being drunk.

The driver, a man in his 20s, was arrested and charged with intoxication, manslaughter and possession of a controlled substance and taken to jail without incident. Police had not released his name as of Tuesday afternoon.

The incident remains under investigation by the Surfside Beach Police Department and the Brazoria County Sheriff’s Department.
