Deaf Ohio school teacher furloughed after allegedly throwing student

A teacher at a school for deaf children in Ohio has been suspended after she was accused of throwing a nine-year-old student to the ground last week.

The alleged incident, which was partially caught on surveillance video, took place at St Rita School for the Deaf in Evendale on December 6 and has infuriated the girl’s mother, WCPO reported.

“Any way you look at it, it’s very obvious that this was a malicious act. It wasn’t a coincidence,” Alexys Wells, the girl’s mother, told the outlet.

In school surveillance footage, which Wells recorded on her phone and later posted to social media, the unidentified teacher was caught picking up the girl and carrying her down the hallway.

The video appears to be flawed at the moment the teacher allegedly threw the student. The child could then be seen on the floor while the teacher stormed off.

The video briefly showed a male and female worker standing over the girl while she continued to lie on the floor.

“When I first saw the video, I was so outraged that I had to take a minute. I was completely speechless, couldn’t really focus on what I wanted to say,” Wells said.

The mother said her non-verbal daughter also told her about the alleged incident.

“She’s completely nonverbal, so the first thing she did was demonstrate what happened to her teacher,” Wells said.

“She just kept saying, ‘My teacher threw me, my teacher threw me, my teacher threw me, she was angry, she threw me.'”

It wasn’t immediately clear what led to the alleged incident, and Well claims the school didn’t tell her anything.

She said they described it as a “minor incident.”

The Archdiocese of Cincinnati, which oversees the school, said the unnamed teacher was placed on leave after local police were notified.

It was not immediately clear who alerted the authorities.

“Any actions by a St. Rita School staff member that do not demonstrate respect and dignity for the children entrusted to our care will be promptly addressed,” said an archdiocese spokesman.

“The safety of students and staff at St. Rita School is of the utmost importance.”
