Dark Knight star Heath Ledger’s most brutal Joker scene was real (cloned)

An unearthed interview with Christian Bale sheds some light on Heath Ledger’s now legendary portrayal of the Joker in Christopher Nolan’s film The dark knight.

Originally published by THRIn the interview, Batman actor Bale recalls Ledger’s “engaged” performance – who would have turned 43 this week – and reveals the actor really wanted to be hit during one of the 2008 film’s pivotal moments, the interrogation scene.

The interview, conducted by Joseph McCabe in 2008, is included in the new book 100 Things Batman Fans Should Know And Do Before They Die.

Bale recalled: “As you see in the film, Batman starts beating the Joker and realizes that this is no ordinary enemy. Because the more I hit him, the more he enjoys it. I satisfy him all the more.

“Heath behaved very similarly. He kind of spurred me on. I said, ‘You know what, I really don’t really have to hit you. It’ll look just as good if I don’t.” And he’s like, ‘Go ahead. Go on. Go on.’

“He was throwing himself around and there were tiled walls inside this set that had cracks and dents from him throwing himself in,” the Oscar winner continued. “His commitment was absolute.”

Ledger died before the film’s release in 2008 and posthumously won an Oscar for the role a year later. While much has been reported over the years about how Ledger’s loyalty to the role altered his mental health before his death, his family has denied such claims.

The dark knight had preceded Batman begins (2005) and followed by trilogy-closer The Dark Knight rises in 2012. principle Filmmaker Nolan directed both.

Bale once admitted he’s not a fan of his own performance in the trilogy, admitting he felt he “didn’t quite pull it off”.
