Daniil Medvedev and Andrey Rublev seal Davis Cup victory for Russia over Croatia

NS Russian The Tennis Federation (RTF) completed the title double as Andrey Rublev and Daniil Medvedev secured Davis Cup victory over Croatia in the final in Madrid.

A month after the Russian won the Billie Jean King Cup final, Rublev beat Borna Gojo and Medvedev saw off Marin Cilic to bring home two of the most prestigious trophies in international team tennis.

Banned from competing under their flag for violating anti-doping rules, the Russians have ensured their positional advantage is carried over to the silver cup.

The only team with two players in the singles top 10, the RTF side got the job done before Croatia could play their trump card in the world No 1 doubles team Nikola Mektic and Mate Povic.

Rublev has been a bit shaky these two weeks but he hit the mark in team Russia’s semi-final win over Germany and continued that against Gojo, who was revealed of the tournament.

Ranked 279, Gojo had won the previous three singles matches against significantly higher ranked players.

He gave another good assessment of himself but Rublev ended up being too strong in a 6-4 7-6 (5) win.

That set the stage for US Open champion Medvedev, who didn’t lose a set throughout the event, and he put on another stellar performance, beating Cilic 7-6 (7) 6-2.

This is the first time a Russian team has won the Davis Cup since 2006, and in an on-field interview, Medvedev said: “It feels great but I’m happier for the team than for myself.

“We have a great team, great atmosphere, and I am very happy to be a part of this team and be able to bring in the points that we need. It’s been a pretty great fortnight because it’s never easy to get here at the end of the season. Two of the best weeks of my career. ”
