Mattea Roachs Danger! Jackpot keeps growing along with their number of consecutive wins. Though the Canadian native rarely stumbles across complicated trivia clues and recently claimed her 21st win, Roach revealed an aspect of the game show that can leave them stumped at times.
Mattea Roach is running out of stories
Danger! GOAT Ken Jennings hosted for the majority Roach’s Victory Run and earned his own claim to fame when he won 74 straight games in 2004. Roach referenced Jennings’ streak when she pointed out the difficulty in finding fresh and engaging anecdotes for each episode seen after the show’s first commercial break.
“It’s going to be tough,” Roach remarked loudly ET Canada. “I didn’t see Ken’s run all the way through as a kid because I was like five, six years old when it happened, but I’m sure he must have really scratched the bottom of the barrel by the end of it.”
Roach wanted to convey a humble demeanor and provided personal stories that were on the low-key side.
“I didn’t want to continue play a game and then my anecdote in this game is something that I feel like fueling myself and telling a story about something that feels boastful,” explained the 23-year-old.
‘Danger!’ champ spiced up their stories
While she wanted to avoid anything that bordered on swagger, Roach decided to liven up her “purposefully boring and generic” stories and spice things up.
“After my first four shows, we had a hiatus from recording and I remember texting the producer who covers the contestants’ anecdotes,” Roach recalled. “I thought, ‘I have to give you better material. Because the stuff I sent you the first time is really boring. “
She added, “‘And I promise I’m more interesting than this.’ “
Ken Jennings had to “make things up” with his “Jeopardy!” run
Jennings can relate to Roach’s dilemma. He recalled being asked to come up with more personal tidbits for each of his 74 episodes.
“After my first show round, I ran out of funny stories,” Jennings said vulture in May 2020. “But every week Danger! would call and say, ‘You’re recording again next week, we need more stories for your cards!’ I had no other stories to tell.”
That Danger! GOAT confessed that he had to use creative license during his winning streak. Though he was sure not to overdo it with far-fetched things, Jennings made up some of his encounter stories.
“I admit that sometimes I make things up,” he said. “I wouldn’t pretend to be a hero or anything, but you can put anything on these cards. The show doesn’t fact check the stuff. … The clues are all double checked, but say what you will for the anecdotes of the candidates.”
Jennings still holds the top spot for consecutive wins Danger! and earned a whopping $2,520,700 in cash during his 74-game streak.
