Dan Stevens has criticized Prime Minister Boris Johnson live on British television.
While promoting his upcoming series gas lit, which is about the Watergate scandal of the 1970s, the British actor attacked the leader of the Conservative Party.
On the BBC’s The One Show (April 13) Stevens provided a brief synopsis of what appears to be his new political thriller, in which he stars alongside Julia Roberts and Sean Penn.
“What you have is a criminal for a leader who is involved in a dirty war, involved in some stupid scandal and surrounded by ambitious idiots and really should resign,” he explained.
That downtown abbey Star then jokingly corrected himself, “No, sorry, that’s the intro to Boris Johnson.”
Presenters Alex Jones and Jermaine Jenas looked speechless after Stevens made the remark.
Johnson was a polarizing figure long before he took office in 2019.
His latest controversy revolves around a breach of Britain’s Covid lockdown laws, which resulted in a fine that has prompted Justice Secretary Lord Wolfson to resign in protest.
Members of the opposing parties are calling for Johnson’s resignation.
gas lit is scheduled to premiere April 24 on Starz in the US.
