Dakota Johnson had ‘psychotic’ experience on ‘Fifty Shades’ set: ‘It was scary’

Dakota Johnson is open about the ‘psychotic’ experience she had filming the ‘Fifty Shades’ movies.

The 32-year-old actress rose to fame after starring in the ‘Fifty Shades of Gray’ trilogy opposite Jamie Dornan.

She revealed in a new cover story for Vanity Fair that she “signed on to do a very different version of the movie that we ended up doing.”

“I’m a sexual person, and when something interests me, I want to know so much about it,” she said. “That’s why I made these big nude films.”

But Johnson suggested that the studio, the director, and even the original books’ author, EL James, were all part of the problem.

James – who goes by the name Erika – had “a lot of creative control every day, and she was just asking for certain things to happen,” Johnson shared.

“There were parts of the books that just wouldn’t work in a movie, like the inner monologue that was incredibly cheesy at times,” she explained. “It wouldn’t work to say it out loud. It was always a struggle.”

Johnson auditioned for the film with a monologue from Ingmar Bergman’s 1996 film Persona and thought the films would be “really special.”

She was cast as Anastasia Steele opposite Charlie Hunnam, 42, as Christian Grey, with Closer playwright Patrick Marber revising the script. When Hunnam dropped out, Johnson said James was so angry that she scrapped the revised script.

“I was young. I was 23. So it was scary,” Johnson said. “It just became something crazy. There were a lot of different disagreements.

“I’ve never been able to be honest about it because you want to promote a film the right way and I’m proud of what we ended up doing and everything is going the way it’s supposed to, but it was difficult,” she continued.

When Dornan, 40, replaced Hunnam, director Sam Taylor-Johnson attempted to revive Marber’s script.

“We shot the movie that Erika wanted to do, and then we shot the movie that we wanted to do,” Johnson said.

Marber’s only scene that was included in the first Fifty Shades film was the scene where Anastasia and Christian negotiate their sexual contract.

“And it’s the best scene in the whole movie,” she explained.

When asked if she had any regrets about doing the trilogy, she replied, “If I had known at the time what it was going to be like, I don’t think anyone would have done it. It would have been like, ‘Oh, that’s psychotic.’ But no, I don’t regret it.”

Johnson also shared that Dornan became “like a brother” to her on set.

“I love him so much. And we were really there for each other,” Johnson said. “We had to really trust each other and protect each other.”

Johnson was hesitant to share more, telling Vanity Fair, “There are things I still can’t say because I don’t want to hurt anyone’s career and I don’t want to damage anyone’s reputation, but both Jamie and I were treated really well.”

“See, it’s been great for our careers,” she said. “So amazing. So happy. But it was weird. So, so weird.”

In a video accompanying the Vanity Fair cover story, Johnson discussed her guest starring role in the 2013 series finale of “The Office.” She had a cameo as Dakota replacing Kevin Malone (Brian Baumgartner) on Dunder Mifflin.

“I kind of got into the series finale of ‘The Office’ because of course I was a fan of ‘The Office,'” Johnson said.

She revealed she felt she didn’t belong there — even after spending two weeks on set.

“I felt like I was going to crash someone’s birthday party when they really didn’t want to invite me — like they just did it to say, ‘Yeah sure, come on!’ ” She said. “And then I was stuck there.”

Johnson also opened up about her private relationship with Coldplay’s Chris Martin.

The couple have been together for five years and she admitted they are keeping their relationship low key due to their blended family. Martin, 45, has two teenagers with his ex, Gwyneth Paltrow, 49.

“Maybe I feel differently about those kinds of relationships because I was raised in my family,” said Johnson, daughter of actors Melanie Griffith, 64, and Don Johnson, 72, and one of seven half-siblings.

“It’s better to be friendly and it’s also really nice that everyone really really loves each other and has each other’s backs,” she added.
