Cyber attack hits Spar stores forcing some stores to close

Some Spar Convenience stores were forced to close after the retailer faced a cyber attack on their systems.

More than 300 stores were affected by the attack, though not all of them closed.

Places that are still open accept cash only as debit and credit card payments cannot work.

The retailer said the attack hit all of the company’s IT systems, including employee emails.

The IT problem first occurred on Sunday and technicians worked all night trying to fix the problem.

Distribution partner James Hall & Company, which supplies food to nearly 600 Spar establishments north of England was also hacked, and its website was down.

“We are working to resolve this situation as quickly as possible,” Spar said.

“It is currently affecting stores’ ability to process card payments, meaning some Spar stores are currently closed to shoppers or accepting cash only.

“We apologize for the inconvenience this is causing our customers and we are working as quickly as possible to resolve the situation.” Cyber attack hits Spar stores forcing some stores to close
