CUNY sells posh $1.4 million home used by campus presidents

The City University of New York is shedding a $1.4 million Staten Island home it acquired to provide free housing for its college presidents, The Post has learned.

CUNY hired a realtor and held an open house this past weekend to sell a Tudor-style home in the tony Todt Hill neighborhood of Staten Island.

The 3,970-square-foot, two-story, four-bedroom, three-bathroom home with a two-car garage is listed for $1,425,000. The total property covers 10,000 square meters.

A public notice for the sale boasted that the home was “perfect for entertaining.”

“It’s a very classic looking home with oversized rooms,” said Susan Tell, an agent at Connie Profaci Realty, who is showing the property.

“I held two open houses this weekend. We have several interested parties.”

The house that housed the President of the College of Staten Island now stands empty.

CUNY said 5% of the sale price is set aside for agent commissions — 3% for its agent and 2% for the buyer’s agent.

CUNY officials also approved a plan to sell a condo at 1 Hanson Place — in the iconic Williamsburg Savings Tower building near Barclays Center in downtown Brooklyn.

The university bought the unit in 2010 for $1.5 million as a perk to house former Medgar Evers College president Rudy Crew, a former New York City school chancellor. It is now valued at $3 million.

CUNY spokesman Joseph Tirella said, “The Staten Island property at 35 Beebe St. is for sale. The property at 1 Hansen Place in Brooklyn is under contract.”

He said CUNY now provides “housing stipends” to the CUNY chancellor and college presidents to pay for their housing expenses.

“Residential grants are standard elements of executive pay for colleges and universities throughout higher education and are necessary to attract and retain high-caliber executives who are critical to CUNY’s long-term success,” said the CUNY spokesperson.

CUNY college presidents receive $5,000 a month in housing benefits. Chancellor Felix Matos Rodriguez receives a monthly housing stipend of $7,500.

CUNY’s generous policy of providing free housing to its chancellors and campus presidents has long been a source of controversy, and discussions of sacking the lots stretch back 20 years.

Ironically, Susan Tell, the agent, said it was Profaci Realty who originally sold the brick and stucco home at 35 Bebee Street to CUNY.

She said she reached out to CUNY officials and made a bid to sell the property after seeing a story in The Post last year that the university was planning to sell the island property along with others.

Tell said “a lot of work” needs to be done to revitalize the property.

The sale of CUNY-owned homes is long overdue, a lawmaker said.

State Senator Toby Stavitsky (D-Queens), who serves as CUNY’s housing fund representative, said: “CUNY should not be a landlord. CUNY is in the education industry and shouldn’t be replacing lightbulbs and doing maintenance repairs.”

CUNY officials said the cost of maintaining the properties was a factor in the properties’ sale.

CUNY is also currently conducting its first-ever comprehensive review to assess the value of all 300 university buildings across the five boroughs for potential revenue opportunities. CUNY sells posh $1.4 million home used by campus presidents
