Cruz trains with Durbin and tells him to hit loud as he pleases.

Senator Ted Cruz and Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Dick Durbin exchanged verbal smacks in a fiery back-and-forth during Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson’s confirmation hearing on Wednesday, prompting the Texas Republican to tell Durbin, “You can” hit the hammer “so loud”. as you wish.”

As Cruz, near the end of his 20-minute period, refined Jackson’s argument for the conviction of child sex offenders and asked her to answer his questions, Durbin banged the gavel to indicate his colleague’s time was up.

“You took over a minute of my time,” Cruz told Durbin (D-Ill.).

“You’ve been given extra time, you usually ask for it,” the chairman snapped back.

The two spoke for a few more moments, with Cruz accusing Durbin of interrupting them and Durbin telling Cruz to “play by the rules.”

The Texan then stated that he would continue to question Jackson, telling Durbin, “If you want to testify, you’re welcome to do so.”

“You’re not recognized, Senator,” Durbin shot back.

“You don’t want her to answer that question?” Cruz asked.

“You wouldn’t allow her…” Durbin said when Cruz cut him off.

“Mr. Chairman, she can answer the question. I asked her why she sentenced Stewart…” Cruz said as Durbin broke in.

“You’re two and a half minutes late, Senator,” he said.

“Because you interrupted me for two minutes, Mr. Chairman,” said an annoyed-sounding Cruz.

“Will you allow her to answer the question, or don’t you want the American people to hear why with someone she’s called outrageous–” Cruz began before Durbin cut him off.

“Chairman Durbin, would you allow her to answer the question?” Cruz pleaded

“You’re not going to allow her to answer the question,” Durbin said, before acknowledging Sen. Chris Coons (D-Del.) for starting his time with Jackson.

“Why don’t you want the American people to know what happened in the Stewart case? Or one of those cases? Chairman Durbin, I have never seen the Chairman refuse to allow a witness to answer a question,” Cruz said as Durbin banged the gavel several more times.

“You can hit it as loud as you want,” Cruz said.

“All I can tell you is that at some point you’re going to have to play by the rules,” Durbin replied.

“Chairman Durbin, it seems we are very afraid of the American people hearing the answer to that question here in the Senate,” Cruz said, before yielding when Coons began his questioning.

A short time later, Los Angeles Times photographer Kent Nishimura tweeted a photo he took Cruz looks at his cell phone during the hearing.

“He searched his name on Twitter,” Nishimura captioned the picture, adding it was taken “right after his exchange with Chairman Durbin.”
