Cruise ship rescues 16 people stranded at sea off Cuba

The crew of a Carnival cruise ship rescued 16 people from a small boat in distress on the open sea near Cuba on Friday as a dangerous tropical storm ravaged the region.

The Mardi Gras cruise ship “sighted a small ship in distress and stopped to assist before 8 a.m. Friday morning as the ship headed for Florida,” Carnival Cruise Lines said in a blog post. “They were then examined by medical staff on board and provided with food and clothing.”

The blog did not identify any of the rescued, who are believed to be Cuban nationals, and said they were taken to the Coast Guard on Friday afternoon.

Among the survivors, who were pulled from a small, overcrowded boat, were 11 men and five women, according to CBS News.

The cruise line told CNN that those who had ID had Cuban nationality.

The rescue came around the same time the National Hurricane Center issued a tropical storm warning for the area, with heavy rain and high seas expected on Saturday. Cruise ship rescues 16 people stranded at sea off Cuba
