RALEIGH, NC (WNCN) — NC State senior outfielder Devonte Brown sat on the podium answering questions after Sunday’s loss of the ACC championship game to North Carolina. Losing to your archrival is never easy.
“Today’s loss (Sunday) definitely hurt,” Brown said. “I think now it’s just a matter of forgetting and moving on and being ready for the next week and trying to play baseball and see how far we can go.”
Unfortunately for the wolf pack, they’ve already gone as far as they can go. NC State was eliminated from the NCAA baseball tournament field of 64 teams.
The selection committee revealed that the pack was the first team, the 65th team in a field of 64 teams.
News of the NC state’s snub sent shockwaves through the triangle.
“It was definitely shocking when we found out,” said North Carolina senior outfielder Angel Zarate after he and his teammates watched the NCAA Baseball Selection show. “We watched it and thought it was over, but we waited, we haven’t heard NC State yet.”
That’s because the pack’s name was never given.
The NC state baseball media put it bluntly in one word – “criminal” – after the pack was let off the field.
This is certainly not how this team imagined the end of the season to be.
“We’re playing really, really well and smarter,” NC State head coach Elliott Avent said after Sunday’s loss. “We’re going to use this week to regroup and maybe try to get better at one little thing because that’s what it’s going to come down to in a regional league.”
Besides the Pack, there will be no more baseball. No more chance for fans to see Tommy White, possibly college baseball’s most amazing power hitter. No chance for the pack to make a different story than they did at last year’s heartbreak in Omaha.
“I think the biggest thing is not letting that game (on Sunday) affect us,” Brown said on Sunday. “You can think about it, but next Monday you have to forget everything and be ready to continue playing baseball. It is not over till it’s over.”
Shockingly for the pack, it’s over.
