SYDNEY (Reuters) – A bold proposal by the Western Australian Sports Minister to swap the dates of the Perth and Adelaide Ashes tests was launched on Monday by the South Australian Cricket Association (SACA).

Cricket Australia is expected to announce in the next few days that Thursday’s test, scheduled for January 14-18 at the Perth Stadium, will be moved to a different city because of the requirement. Western Australia’s strict quarantine.

Western Australia has largely managed to keep COVID-19 out with strict border controls and is currently barring travelers from New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia from entering the state without going through a 14-day quarantine. .

The fourth test is scheduled to end in the New South Wales capital Sydney on January 9, not enough time for the players to complete the isolation period.

Travelers arriving in Western Australia from Queensland, where the first test was conducted on Wednesday, will be allowed to enter without quarantine and Sports Minister Tony Buti has suggested players travel directly to Perth from Brisbane .

“The second ash test will be conducted at the Adelaide Oval in 10 days’ time,” SACA’s Jodie Newton told the Sydney Morning Herald.

“No suggestion of a schedule change for the Adelaide Test will be considered. The Adelaide Day and Night Trials is the largest annual event in South Australia, and there is no bigger tour than the Ashes Festival.”

Buti had previously told The West Australian that the test dates should be swapped.

“There is no wisdom. As long as Queensland is COVID-free then teams can fly ahead of the pink ball’s day and night test, which is scheduled to start on December 16,” he said.

“The simple solution is to bring that testing here while South Australia manages the COVID outbreak. Adelaide can then hold the fifth test originally scheduled for Perth. ”

Hobart, which was scheduled to host a test with Afghanistan in November before it was postponed after the Taliban took over the country, is the favorite to take over the hosting rights for the fifth test.

Officials in Sydney and Melbourne have also said they will be preparing to hold the second test in the series.
