Could NC reach $5 a gallon for gasoline? Expert says it could be a possibility by Memorial Day

CHARLOTTE, NC (WJZY) – The ache at the pump is getting worse and worse for some drivers every day.

“It’s a pretty big deal for me because I have to put in about twenty dollars a day to get to and from work,” said Jacob Walker of Cleveland County.

In some states, prices have risen by ten cents in one day. AAA of the Carolinas says workers are watching gas prices, and unfortunately they won’t be coming down any time soon.

A year ago at this time the national average for a gallon of gasoline was $3.04 and now the average price per gallon is $4.59. JP Morgan forecasts the entire country will see $6 a gallon later this year, possibly as early as August, and GasBuddy expects the $5 a gallon mark to fall over Memorial Day weekend.

“Let’s face it, everything costs more,” said Tiffany Wright, director of public affairs for the Carolinas’ AAA. “No matter what you drive, no matter where you drive, you will spend more this summer season.”

There are also some factors that drive up the price.

“We’ve already started the summer blend, the summer switch, I should say, to the more expensive fuel blend,” Wright said. “It’s already started, it won’t end until mid-June and that’s seven to ten cents more than what you’ll see at the pump.”

This mixture helps the gas vaporize at high temperatures. Then there is demand and high crude oil prices.

But people say even with the higher prices, it won’t change their habits for now.

“We just stop and fill up because you have to have it and we just go,” says Belmont’s Darryl McClure. “It hasn’t stopped us yet, that doesn’t mean it could stop us, at the moment it hasn’t stopped us at all. So we go and do what we have to do, have fun and enjoy life.”
