Costco employees famously say they make $29.50 ‘just for drawing smileys on receipts’

ONE Costco The employee went viral after she posted a bragging video about her salary, sparking a debate about wages in the US.

Natalie, whose name is natnatt @ 21 on TikTok, posted a video of her and a colleague with the words: “When you make $29.50 [£22.33] just to draw smileys on receipts”.

When shoppers leave a Costco store, employees check their receipt and sometimes, stamp a smiley face on it to show it’s emptied.

Natalie can be seen moving to the music in the video posted on November 28 with the caption, “And it’s a combination… Gotta love Costco.”

Although the video has received more than 17.5 million views, the payment for Natalie has also sparked a debate.

Some users on social media claim that Natalie’s salary is more than many other jobs, including health care workers like nurses.

User Leah Baby commented: “*Throw my nursing degree in the trash*”.

“Madam, I am a nurse and you earn more than what I did in my staff job,” commented a user named ashley5918.

“Then why should I get less than that to save lives?” another user commented.

However, many others pointed out that instead of directing their outrage at Natalie, they should ask why other employers aren’t paying enough, and should blame the system.

“If you think that earning the same is not fair to you and that person, you should probably be more upset with your employer than someone else working,” commented one user named Leia.

“Costco is one of the few places where people can earn a living wage – This should be the rule, not the exception,” commented user Johnathan Corrales.

“What is crazy to me is that this happens all too often when people in certain fields think they should make more money than people in easier jobs like retail or food service. or whatever,” said another user Khaleah.

“They always scoff at how those people should earn less instead of how they should earn more.”

In February, Costco announced that it would increase its minimum wage to $16 (£12.11) an hour beating most of its main competitors.

Amazon, Target and Best Buy have minimum wages of $15 (£11.35), while Walmart’s starting salary is $11 an hour.

In the US, the federal minimum wage is currently $7.25 (£5.49). Pass a provision in the Better Back Building Act, which details Biden AdministrationOn economic and social spending, Democrats want to raise the federal minimum wage to $15 within five years.

However, a growing number of states have increased the minimum wage to $15 an hour. Costco employees famously say they make $29.50 ‘just for drawing smileys on receipts’
