Coronation Street fans were shocked to see the Benidorm star make a surprise cameo as Maria Connor’s rival

CORONATION Street welcomed another Benidorm star to the cobbles last night.

Corrie already has Tony Maudsley, who played Kenneth in the ITV comedy series, on the soap – but last night viewers were delighted to see Derren Litten make a cameo appearance.

The writer and actor behind Benidorm appeared as Maria Connor’s political nemesis Bernard Barnes on yesterday’s show.

Viewers know that hairdresser Maria has started her political campaign to be elected to the local council.

She is determined to save Red Rec from the developers and reduce Weatherfield’s air pollution.

But last night she faced her biggest rival – Bernard, played by Derren.

Viewers at home loved this cameo and took to Twitter to share their joy.

One tweeted: “It’s @DerrenLitten the creator of Benidorm on #Corrie.”

While another said: “This guy is the creator of the Benidorm comedy #Corrie.”

Derren announced his appearance on the ITV soap just hours before his scenes were aired.

“Bernard Barnes has a brief appearance on @itvcorrie tonight (and a bit more on Monday). I cannot express how honored I am to be a speck of dust on the timeline of what is the longest running television soap opera in the world – Coronation Street,” he wrote

Benidorm was a huge hit on ITV during its un for ten series from 2007 to 2018.

Derren guest starred several times on the show as different characters.

His last appearance on the show was the role of “Elvis”, chauffeur for Crystal Hennesy-Vass (played by Joan Collins), CEO of Solana Hotel Groups.

Derren is also known as a co-writer of the award-winning Catherine Tate Show, on which he also starred.

He has also appeared on numerous other TV shows including Perfect World, French and Saunders, Spaced, EastEnders, Green Wing and Pie in The Sky.
