Cook’s political report changes governor’s eight races towards GOP

Andrew Trunsky

Friday’s nonpartisan Cook Politics report moved eight highly profitable acting director races in favor of Republicans as Democrats continue to face political headwinds.

Ranked in Michigan, Wisconsin and Nevada, three key battleground states, change from “Lean Democracy” to “Ridiculous”. Each has a first-term Democratic incumbent – Govs. Gretchen Whitmer, Tony Evers and Steve Sisolak battled to win re-election, respectively, in a state where President Joe Biden won by less than four points in 2020.

Other states with changes were Maine, New Mexico, Oregon, Iowa and South Carolina. Cook noted that while Democrats remained the favorites in the first three seasons, ratings in Iowa and South Carolina both shifted from “Probably Republican” to “Solid Republican.”

Only one governor’s race turned in favor of the Democrats, with ratings in New York shifting from “Likely Democrat” to “Solid Democrat”.

In Maine, former Republican Governor Paul LePage is seeking a rematch with Governor Janet Mills, his successor. Republicans have also targeted Democratic New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham and term Democratic Oregon Governor Kate Brown, whom a recent poll pegged as most unpopular governor in the country — but Democrats are still favorites in states where Biden won easily last November.

No senior Democratic challenger has sought to oust the Republican Governor of Iowa, Cook noted, while an unfavorable political environment for Democratic Party member was the reason behind Cook’s decision to change his South Carolina rating, despite former Democratic Representative Joe Cunningham’s candidacy.

The shift isn’t the only one Cook has done this week. On Wednesday, it switched the Massachusetts governor’s race from a “solid Republican” to a “Lean Democrat” after incumbent Republican Governor Charlie Baker chose to retire instead of running for a third term, while it switched Georgia’s run from “Lean Republicans” to “Toss Up” after Stacey Abrams said she would challenge incumbent Governor Brian Kemp, setting up a high potential rematch.
