Colorado is testing the omicron variant and suppliers are preparing for its arrival

AURORA, Colo. (KDVR) – UCHealth labs run thousands of COVID-19 tests every day. A certain percentage of positive tests are then sent to a Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment lab for gene sequencing, and that’s where the variants are discovered.

“I know they take one percent of that from all the different hospitals and do the sequencing,” said Dr. Michelle Barron, senior medical director for infection prevention at UCHealth.

“Within the next few weeks, I wouldn’t be surprised at all if we had a few cases,” Barron said.

While the variation is being watched, Barron says don’t panic.

“We don’t have all that information on hand yet,” she said.

Studies are underway right now to determine if omicrons are more contagious, the severity of symptoms, and how effective current treatments and vaccines are against it such as how.

Drugmakers are ready to act if needed.

“If this becomes a serious threat that requires a new vaccine, I think we will have it within a few months,” Barron said.

In the meantime, she said UCHealth was ready when omicrons were detected here.

“It’s not going to change what we’re doing,” Barron said. Hospitals will continue to take the same proven precautions, and people at home should do the same.

The best way to protect yourself from this variant is to get vaccinated and get booster shots when eligible, she says.
