Republican voters in Colorado’s new 8th congressional district elected Senator Barbara Kirkmeyer on Tuesday, rejecting Democratic efforts to promote former state Representative Lori Saine, who received financial support from House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s PAC.
Kirkmeyer, a Colorado state senator, received 40.9% of the vote, while Thornton Mayor Jan Kulmann took 22.8% and Saine 19.6% with 97% of the vote.
Colorado is one of several states where Democrats have backed conservative or far-right candidates and are betting they’ll be easier to defeat in the fall.
Such was the case with Saine, who was boosted by the Pelosi run house majority PAC through $46,000 in TV ads. The ads raised Saine’s support for former President Donald Trump’s voter fraud claims in 2020, as well as her anti-abortion and pro-gun rights.
“Do we really want a conservative warrior as our next member of Congress?” Went the script for an ad that concluded, “Lori Saine: She’s way too conservative for Colorado.”
Elsewhere, Democrats spent more than $2 million on Colorado’s Ron Hanks for the US Senate nomination, betting on him to target businessman Joe O’Dea over GOP voter complaints with O’Deas neutral attitude towards abortion.
In Illinois, the Democratic Governors Association spent heavily on ads supporting Sen. Darren Bailey, who opposed Gov. JB Pritzker’s Covid-19 closure against Gov. JB Pritzker.
And in Pennsylvania, Josh Shapiro Josh Shapiro spent the Democratic gubernatorial spot more than six numbers for attacking GOP state Sen. Doug Mastriano during GOP elementary school. Mastriano – who organized bus trips to Washington to visit Trump supporters to attend the “Stop the Steal” rally that sparked the January 6, 2021 Capitol riot and was spotted in video footage with his wife through broken barricades – finally pulled away from one was pulled away from one pulled away from crowded field to win the competition.
Some Democrats have warned of the tactic, saying it could backfire in a medium-term environment expected to be hostile to the party.
“This has to be done very carefully,” said former Democratic Missouri Senator Claire McCaskill, who successfully seeded Republican Todd Akin in his primary before defeating re-election in 2012, NPR told NPR this week. “You also have to be careful what you wish for.”
Kirkmeyer will take over against Yadira Caraveo, a lawmaker.
