City of Birmingham renames part of stadium in memory of Arthur Labinjo-Hughes

Birmingham City FC has renamed part of its stadium in memory of 6-year-old Arthur Labinjo-Hughes.

The club’s Family Zone will now be called the Arthur Zone, providing ‘a fun space for young supporters to enjoy before the game starts’.

There are also plans to install a giant flag and memorial bricks outside St Andrew’s stadium, as well as a memorial garden ‘where supporters can spend a quiet moment in remembrance. miss him’.

Arthur was killed by his stepmother and father after months of suffering or cruel abuse, including being poisoned with salt.

In one of the photos released by police as part of a criminal case, the young Birmingham City fan can be seen beaming in a Blues jersey.

The same painting has since been turned into a mural in Digbeth, with fans of both Birmingham and local rival Aston Villa contributing to its creation.

West Midlands Mayor Andy Street tweeted a picture of the mural, saying: ‘It says so much about our city and our region in the way that people have come together in the face of adversity. such tragedy and heartbreak.’

The City of Birmingham said: ‘The enduring image of Arthur, shared on social media and used by several newspapers in recent weeks, depicts a smiling, happy young boy. wear the Blues jersey, and we as a Club will strive to keep that memory alive in everyone’s hearts and minds forever.

‘Arthur Labinjo-Hughes, you are loved.’

The match program for Saturday’s match against Cardiff will feature Arthur on the main cover, with £1 from each sale going to children’s charities in Birmingham.
