Major League Baseball is in lockdown, so who knows when we’ll get it Chicago White Sox baseball is back.
The 2022 season may have started at the right time but the labor battle between the owners and the players has kept both sides trying. We may be looking at the possibility no baseball for a while.
The last major move the Chicago White Sox made before closing was to re-sign Leury Garcia. Garcia provided one of the few highlights in his 2021 Chicago White Sox post-season appearance as he hit a 3-point home run in Game 3 of the American League Division Series.
The Chicago White Sox is expected to make it to the knockout stages whenever this labor issue is resolved and we have the 2022 season.
Instead of watching millionaires battle billionaires, and in honor of Garcia’s return to the Southside, let’s relive some of the other memorable post-season marches home in Chicago White Sox history — in order. time.
October 6, 1917: With a goal late in the fourth round, Oscar “Happy” Flesch stepped onto the plate to face New York Giants pitcher Slim Sallee. Flesch went on to beat the first White Sox at home after the season in Game 1 of the World Series. The run home will also be the decisive one because White Sox won 2-1. The Sox will go on to win the World Series 4 – 2 against the Giants.
October 9, 1919: Joe Jackson does not wear shoes has achieved a two-out, solo home run in Game 8 of the World Series – the World Series was the best of the nine at the time. Jackson played the only home Sox in the famous Black Sox World Series.
Jackson was implicated along with seven other people players in the repair of the World Series. Jackson first admitted that he took $5,000 but later claimed he was not part of the fix. He hit .375 in the series and he was acquitted of the charges he threw in the series. He remains famously banned for life by Major League Baseball Commissioner, Judge Kenesaw Mountain Landis.
It will be a long time before the White Sox do the World Series again.
October 1, 1959: The White Sox finally broke their 40-year playoff drought with a World Series game against the Los Angeles Dodgers. The first half took place at Comiskey Park and the Sox faithful watched Ted Kluszewski score two goals at home.
The White Sox knocked out the Los Angeles Dodgers 11-0 for their first win of the season in 40 years. Unfortunately, the Dodgers won the series in six games.
October 9, 1993: The White Sox lost 3-2 to the Toronto Blue Jays at the Skydome in Game 4 of the American League Championship Series. Frank Thomas won the top spot against Todd Stottlemyre. Big Hurt has kicked off a home game that may require a passport to re-enter the stands with a long flight to end the game.
The White Sox went on to win 7-4 and draw the ALCS after two games. Alas, the Blue Jays won the next two games to advance to the World Series.
