Chemical factory fire forced people to evacuate in New Jersey

PASSAIC, NJ (WPIX) – A New Jersey chemical plant fire prompted public officials to order residents to seal their homes as a massive fire and smoke billowed up about 10 miles northwest of the Hudson River. .

Passaic Mayor Hector Lora took to Facebook to warn residents about Fire at a dangerous chemical factory in the city. Passaic, New Jersey, is located 10 miles north of Newark and 15 miles west of Manhattan.

“We need you to stay out of this area,” Lora urged. “This is an extremely serious fire as it is still being evaluated chemically.”

Lora said in a separate Facebook Live Firefighters are battling chlorine, which does not burn on its own but can make fires more intense Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

In his Facebook video, the mayor said fire departments from other New Jersey cities were also responding.

“I must stress, all residents, get out of the area,” Lora repeated online. Residents were evacuated from surrounding areas and told to close their windows in at least one nearby municipality, the Associated Press reported.

Officials upgraded the fire to 11 fire alarms Friday night.

Lora posted another Live video on Facebook at around 10:50 p.m. ET, speaking to a firefighter who described the blaze as “uncontrolled.”

“We’re doing everything we can to stop it,” he said.

In the second video, Lora describes the situation as “one of the worst fires” he has witnessed “in a long time.”

New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy took to Twitter to address the danger, repeating calls for those nearby to close their windows.

“If you live nearby, close your windows. Praying for the safety of our first responders at the scene,” Murphy wrote.

The Passaic Office of Public Information said the fire had not caused any injuries as of Friday night.
