Thomas Tuchel explained why he took down Saul Niguez in ChelseaPremier League clash with Watford and insisted the decision was for ‘tactical reasons’.

Saul, who joined Chelsea on loan from Atlético Madrid During the summer, he only made his second Premier League appearance at Vicarage Road on Wednesday night.

But the Spaniard struggled in the first half when Emmanuel Dennis canceled out Mason Mount’s opener and was replaced by Thiago Silva at the interval.

Saul was also sidelined at half-time on his Premier League debut and it appears he is struggling to adapt to English football and reap success during his loan spell at Stamford Bridge.

Watford were the better team in the first 45 minutes and Chelsea continued to struggle after the first half but still preserved 3 points thanks to a second-half substitute Hakim Ziyech’s goal.

Speaking after the 2-1 win, Tuchel was asked about Saul’s replacement and said: ‘I don’t know where he’s going after this performance but he’s been booked so we have two options.

‘We could have taken Marcos [Alonso] who was also shown a yellow card and tried Saul at full-back.

‘I was thinking about this before the game, if something happens to Marcos. But I thought maybe it wasn’t the right match to try new positions, so [subbing] he changed shape a bit and had Thiago on the field with his organization.

‘There’s Trevoh [Chalobah] in number six, who was in better shape – unfortunately Trevoh injured himself and we ended up with Ruben at number six. But it was a tactical decision. ‘

While former Chelsea manager Claudio Ranieri felt his side deserved ‘at least a point’ in the Vicarage Road clash, he was pleased with the home side’s performance. when they threatened to stun the European champions.

“We deserved at least one point but that’s football,” the Hornets boss said. ‘I am very pleased with our performance.

‘Chelsea have great players but all we can do is carry on and believe. We never give up. We want to continue this way. We believe this is the right path. ‘
