Things then spilled over as punches were thrown and drinks flew before the notoriously stubborn Madrid police rushed in with batons and shields to restore order.

Kevin de Bruyne grabbed the only goal of the first leg in Manchester, which means heading towards Wanda tomorrow night.

City know that a draw will be enough to get them through in a partially closed stadium after Uefa attacked Atletico for the fans’ “discriminatory behaviour” at the Etihad last week.

However, Atletico have NEVER lost a Champions League game if you lose the first leg away by one goal.
