It’s a strange time to be a celebrity. The rise of so many social media platforms has given stars — especially those hoping to break into the music business — a chance to reach potential fans more directly, but it also means they must navigate an ongoing interaction that bridges the line between the private and the private transcends the public.
Musician Charlie Puth is one of the many stars who owe his rise to social media, but now that his work has gone more mainstream he’s having to balance several demands. That reality left him red-faced (literally) in a behind-the-scenes video about the creative process for his hit song “Light Switch.”
Charlie Puth is a singer-songwriter of fast-growing fame
Charlie Puth has been firmly entrenched in the entertainment world since his debut album in 2016 Nine Track Ghost. Before that, however, he was already garnering a growing following on YouTube. He started out by posting comedic videos and covers of well-known songs before eventually bringing his own original work to the platform. As the likes and shares grew, he was given both the support and practice to bring a full-length album to the world, and his fame has continued to rise ever since.
He’s been helped by collaborations that have given him an ever-expanding reach among diverse groups of fans. From Meghan Trainor to Elton John, Puth has friends in high places, and this added boost to his career helped him rise from YouTube star to veritable music industry elite.
As All Music reports, Puth “regularly mined vintage sounds like early R&B, classic singer/songwriter and commercial end of new wave for his spirited contemporary pop” to create his sound. His most influential hit to date was “See You Again,” which earned him three Grammy nominations.
Why was Charlie Puth’s face so red on his “Light Switch” TikTok?
Puth released the single “Light Switch” in January 2022 as a preview of his forthcoming third album. CHARLIE. The album promises to delve deep into emotionality as Puth has revealed how it’s been impacted by the “worst year” of his life and a terrible breakup. Because the album is so personal, Puth may have used TikTok to give fans a behind-the-scenes look at the creative process that led to the writing of “Light Switch.”
The short video takes fans through Puth’s creative process as he tries to figure out the different sounds he needs to mix on the track that would eventually become “Light Switch”. However, some fans were distracted by Puth’s extremely red face. In fact, Puth got questions about his cherry complexion when he showed up Jimmy Kimmel Live.
Puth explained to Kimmel, “I had just gotten a facial that day because I really didn’t think anyone would look at that video.” Apparently, Puth underestimated his appeal to fans given that the video has now been viewed almost 16 million times !
Charlie Puth has found fame in two different worlds
Puth now navigates fame and fandom across different worlds. He has his Grammy-nominated work that’s sleek and polished and ready for mass consumption, but he also nurtures a loyal following of mostly younger fans who see him mostly on social media.
On a recent TikTok, Puth shows fans frame-by-frame breakdowns of his video for That’s Hilarious as he explains the making process. The videos — like the one in which he envisions a tour introducing each song through its sound effects — are often casual, featuring wandering streams of consciousness in short clips.
This kind of interaction with fans gives Puth a chance to let down the walls and be more open and fresh, and he admits it’s a bit strange having fans who only know him from TikTok. He even told Kimmel about a 10-year-old fan who saw him and said, “That’s Charlie from TikTok.” Puth laughed as he said, “No, I’m actually a three-time Grammy nominee. I’ve got something like a… a Golden Globe.” Those awards may have great appeal among Puth’s rich and famous associates, but he’ll remain “Charlie of TikTok” for many of his young fans.
