Challenges mount for Democrats as Biden plans NC visit

RALEIGH, NC (WNCN) – The United States is suffering from the highest rate of inflation in 40 years. All that comes with that distinction weighs heavily on a party trying to retain control of the House and Senate.

“That’s a task that’s only going to get harder when people’s 401Ks don’t look as good as they used to, people’s gas prices keep going up, or at least not falling in any marketable way,” said Chris Cooper, a political science professor at Western Carolina University.

It’s something President Joe Biden is expected to address Thursday in a state he lost in 2020 that a CBS 17 poll has his approval rating at 44 percent.

“He’s got to keep his approval rating afloat or he’s going to have a really tough Congress less than a year from now,” Cooper said.

Biden’s appearance in Greensboro comes less than a week after the first Rally of President Donald Trump in Selma. New elections, resignations in Congress and an open race in the US Senate have the Republicans running at full speed.

The aggressive approach and ability to shake up the crowd is something Democrats need to think about, according to Cooper.

“I think there was a feeling, at least for some people, that it was time to have someone who was honestly a bit more boring, maybe not quite as outspoken as Donald Trump, but keen to get the average American’s attention draw , the average voter, the average North Carolinian, it’s an incredibly tall task for Joe Biden or any Democratic candidate.

Wake County Congresswoman Deborah Ross said she will join Biden at North Carolina A&T University.

“The fact that he’s delivering this speech from the largest historically black college in the United States. So I think the news relates to North Carolina, but the news is also about being at an HBCU in North Carolina,” Cooper said.
