Is the COVID-19 pandemic over or not?
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced on Wednesday that they plan to extend the mask mandate on public transportation by another 15 days — despite the abolition of the Title 42 health agency for illegal immigrants earlier this month due to the widespread availability of coronavirus -Treatments.
The cover-up order was due to expire on April 18, but will now not be lifted until May 3 at the earliest.
“Since early April, the 7-day rolling average of cases in the United States has increased,” the CDC said in a statement shared on social media. “To assess the potential impact of increases in hospitalizations and deaths, and health care system capacity, the CDC rule will remain in effect at this time.”
On April 1, however, there were no such concerns when the agency announced on May 23 it would wind down Title 42 – which allowed border guards to expel migrants without hearing asylum claims due to the ongoing pandemic.
At the time, the CDC cited “current public health conditions and an increased availability of tools to combat COVID-19 (such as high-potency vaccines and therapeutics)” as justification for terminating the policy.
It wasn’t immediately clear if the CDC would reverse that policy — as lawmakers from both political parties have been calling for — due to the surge in cases due to the more contagious BA.2 subvariant of the Omicron strain, which the agency says is more than outnumbering 85% of cases in the US.
Republican lawmakers took to social media on Wednesday to blast the CDC’s decision, with Sen. Rand Paul saying it was “no surprise.”
“No surprise – Biden continues to mandate wearing ineffective masks on planes – time to vote these petty tyrants out of office.” the Kentucky Republican tweeted.
“That’s crazy,” Rep. Mike Rogers (R-Ala.) wrote.
“Biden can’t tell us he’s following the science when Americans are forced to wear masks on planes, but he’s dropping the only tool we have for expelling illegal migrants with COVID.” Rep. Pat Fallon (R-Texas) posted.
Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee was labeled The move was a “stupid decision,” which reads: “Stupid decision and resistance from airlines, flight attendants and travelers.” Stop this madness! Masks can be optional. CDC extends travel mask mandate for another 15 days.”
Several members of Congress accused the administration of following “political science,” pointing to the hypocrisy of lifting some pandemic restrictions and not others.
“And POLITICAL science goes on” Rep. Tom Tiffany (R-Wis.) wrote. “The Biden administration plans to extend the mask mandate on planes, but it is lifting pandemic restrictions on illegal aliens. Will they ever stop making the American people LAST?”
“President Biden extends mask mandate on public transit but ends Title 42 COVID restrictions on our southern border.” tweeted Rep. Jake LaTurner (R-Kan.). “The only science that Democrats follow is political science. It is time to END all mask requirements!”
“The Biden administration will scrap Track 42 on the southern border, but lifting the mask mandate on public transit appears to be a step too far.” Rep. Virginia Foxx (R-Va.) sent. “FOLLOW THE SCIENCE.”
Rep. Chuck Fleischmann (R-Tenn.) echoed this view, saying the government’s policy “makes no sense.”
“Biden repeals Title 42 to flood the border with illegal immigrants because he says COVID is no longer a threat — but he continues to force Americans to wear masks on planes, trains and buses because of COVID.” he tweeted. “None of this administration makes an ounce of sense.”
Rep. Troy Nehls (R-Texas) appeared to accuse the entire Democratic Party of hypocrisy and shared a picture of President Biden kissing House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) on the cheek.
“Democrats: ‘We force you to wear masks on planes to protect you’. Also Democrats: he wrote and attached the picture.
“The Biden admin needs to stop talking with both sides of his mouth about COVID. They have no problem saying the COVID emergency is over to reverse Title 42 and exacerbate the border crisis, but they still use COVID as an excuse to uphold unscientific mandates for Americans. Too much hypocritical bullshit” Rep. Lee Zeldin (R-NY) tweeted.
Statewide mask mandates at restaurants and other businesses have been largely lifted across the country, with no impact on the spread of cases.
