CBS is pushing for a study blaming climate change for rising childhood obesity rates

CBS Mornings on Thursday ran a mocked segment of a recent study linking climate change and hotter temperatures to childhood obesity rates.

Co-host Nate Burleson introduced the study, published in Temperature magazine, which argued, “Climate change, particularly warmer temperatures, is making our children more sedentary and obese.”

Burleson said the study found children were 30% less “aerobic fit” than their parents and claimed hotter temperatures discourage children from exercising outside.

Although the segment focused primarily on climate change, Burleson acknowledged that technology was likely a factor in the increase in childhood obesity.

“Listen, it’s been a lot hotter and the weather has been crazy, but I think it has to do with the technology too, you know. It’s one thing not to go outside, but these kids don’t go outside because they can stay inside and talk on the phone, play video games and be social without having to go outside and be social,” Burleson said.

However, several Twitter users attacked the segment for emphasizing “climate change” as a factor in childhood obesity without also acknowledging coronavirus lockdowns.

“Do you think it could… no, it couldn’t be. Must be climate change,” joked Deseret News writer Bethany Mandel.

Hans Mahncke, co-host of “Truth Over News” on EpochTV, tweeted: “They have made children fat by closing schools, playgrounds, parks and beaches. Predictably, they now blame “climate change”. Unless there are harsh penalties for the scammers who enforced bans, it will happen again.”

“Climate change? Ffs,” wrote National Review journalist Claude Thompson.

Former Congresswoman Nan Hayworth tweeted, “NO. NO. NO. Many factors contribute to children’s unfitness, but climate change is NOT one of them. This is propaganda urging CBS, like all ‘mainstream’ media, to intimidate Americans into accepting government intervention – at any cost!! – accept against the climate apocalypse.”

Washington Free Beacon reporter Joe Gabriel Simonson directly attacked CBS Mornings for misrepresenting the study to advance a climate agenda.

“[T]That seemed too crazy even for leftwing climate scientists, so I read the abstract of the study. The authors don’t blame climate change for kids getting fat, but that fat kids may have a harder time dealing with climate change because fat people don’t do as well in the heat,” Simonson tweeted.

A study published in the National Library of Medicine in July found that during the coronavirus lockdown, “significant weight gain” was reported in the majority of subjects, particularly those with pre-existing weight problems.

It concluded: “Data analysis has clearly demonstrated the adverse effects of COVID-19 lockdown on body weight and BMI in children and adolescents, with pre-existing overweight/obese children at higher risk of weight gain.” CBS is pushing for a study blaming climate change for rising childhood obesity rates
