Cawthorn’s claims of orgies and cocaine indulgences stir disbelief

RALEIGH, NC (WNCN) – Orgies and cocaine.

These claims attract disbelief after a The congressman from North Carolina made them.

“Involving your colleagues in orgies and not just cocaine but key jabs of cocaine, a phrase I honestly had to google before I knew what it meant. So that was something new, even for Madison Cawthorn,” said Chris Cooper, a professor of political science at Western Carolina University.

Cooper lives in Rep. Madison Cawthorn’s congressional district.

Cawthorn recently appeared on a Warrior Poet Society podcast and YouTube video.

He was asked if the Netflix show House of Cards was closer to a documentary.

Cawthorn replied: “I look at all these people, a lot of them I’ve looked up to my whole life, I’ve always paid attention to politics. Then you’re suddenly invited, ‘Well, hey, we’re having some sort of sexual encounter at one of our houses, you should come.’”

Cawthorn also claimed he saw some campaigning to fight addiction who used cocaine before him.

Both North Carolina Sens. Thom Tillis and Richard Burr have criticized Cawthorn on CNN.

According to witnesses, Congressman Steve Womack of Arkansas stood up at a meeting with his colleagues and said he was getting questions from his constituents about cocaine and orgies.

Womack noted that many lawmakers go to bed at 9 p.m. and still use fax machines and clamshell phones, and that it was inappropriate for Cawthorn to paint them with a broad brush.

“I think it goes without saying that no one thinks this was a good thing. Today I can’t even believe that Madison Cawthorn would think that was a good thing. It sounds like he was attracted to McCarthy and you know I rarely say that, but in this case I think it was well deserved,” Cooper said.

This dress-down comes less than a week after Minority leader Kevin McCarthy responded to Cawthorn’s response, which branded Ukraine’s President Zelinsky a thug.

“Madison is wrong, if there’s a thug in this world it’s Putin. You just saw how Putin, with Russia, instructed Russia to bomb a maternity ward. We saw yesterday in a theater which can be seen from the air front back that you are accommodating children. Bomb. This is cruel, this is wrong, this is the aggressor, this is the one who must end this war. Everyone should unite against this,” McCarthy said at a press conference.

On Wednesday, McCarthy said Cawthorn gave him no evidence to support this characterization. The explanation for the cocaine allegation was: “He thinks he may have seen an employee in the parking garage from 100 meters away.”

“This is unacceptable, there is no evidence for that,” McCarthy said. “That’s not the place for a congressman. He wasn’t telling the truth.”

“He lost my trust and needs to earn it back,” McCarthy said. “You can’t just say, ‘You can’t do that again.’ I mean, he has – he has a lot of members who are very upset. He can’t just make statements.”

The last comments are the same new video has been released by the North Carolina State Highway Patrol of Cawthorn, who was pulled over for speeding and cited for driving while his driver’s license was revoked.

Cawthorn has been quoted multiple times on different occasions for the same cause.

Cooper said the litany of issues is the main theme for the candidates running against Cawthorn in the primary.

“There’s a 19.2-mile greenway, Rails to Trails, and Madison Cawthorn called it Super Communist. There was some massive Cruso flooding and there was much criticism of Cawthorn’s response, or lack thereof. And then just last week he showed up in tiny Sylva, North Carolina of 2,200 people to hand over one of those oversized checks for $200,000. When he tried to pull out the check, it turned out that he had actually voted against legislation that gave the city that money. There are seven people running against Madison Cawthorn for a total of eight in the primary, and all seven are trying to portray themselves as more mature, mature, and better decision makers than Madison Cawthorn. That will obviously make things easier,” Cooper said.

Cawthorn has not yet responded to the latest developments.
