Cat Power previews ‘cover’ with holiday soundtrack Billie

A few months ago, Electric Cat (aka Chan Marshall) announced cover, a new album that includes, yes, cover versions of other artists’ songs. (This release should not be confused with her 2000 cover album, Record Covers.) is expected to arrive on January 14, but before that she gave a few previews of it today. One is her rendition of Billie Holiday’s “I’ll Be See You” and the other is “Unhate”, a parody of her own song “Hate”.

Marshall also shared a video for the cover, which shows her singing the song in a dimly lit bar. Marshall said of the song, “When the people you love have left you, there’s always a song that holds their memory in your mind. It’s a conversation with the people on the other side and it’s really important to me to reach out to people that way. “

As for “Unhate,” the new recording shows Marshall updating the song (originally from the 200s). The greatest) for a sharper instrumentation, less lo-fi and more flesh.

In addition to those songs, cover includes renditions of songs by artists such as Frank Ocean, Lana Del Rey, and even Dead Man’s Bones, a duo consisting of Zach Shields and actor Ryan Gosling.

Listen to “I’ll Be See You” and “Unhate” above.
