Carnival Freedom cruise ship fire: passengers safe after smokestack catches fire in Turks & Caicos

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico — The smokestack of a Carnival Cruise ship docked in the Turks and Caicos Islands caught fire Thursday and officials were allowing guests and crew to disembark as thick smoke billowed into the air.

Carnival said in a statement that no one was injured in the Grand Turk incident, although it was not immediately clear what caused the fire, which was filmed by passengers.

“All guests and crew are safe,” the company said.

The Carnival Freedom left Florida on Monday for a five-day cruise.
