Carlow body: poll launched after an elderly man’s body ‘was taken to the post office and attempted to claim alimony’

The mayor of Carlow in Ireland said the local community was shocked by the reports: “It’s like a Hitchcock movie.”
Irish police are investigating reports that the body of an elderly man is believed to have been taken to a post office in Co Carlow.
Reported in our sister title Newsletter suggested that an attempt was made to claim his pension.
The Times of Ireland reported that the deceased pensioner was supported by “two men” as his body was brought into the building.
It said the two men “dropped” the body and fled when staff questioned them.
The newspaper said it understood that an employee involved “inquired about the health of the man being supported” as the group approached the post office counter.
Carlow Mayor Ken Murnane said the local community was completely shocked by the reports.
He told the PA news agency: “The whole town is in shock that someone could actually come up with such a thing, it’s unbelievable.
“It’s bewildering in the mind that anyone can happen to do something like that, that’s belief. It was like a Hitchcock movie.”
A spokesman for Garda said the gardai was investigating all circumstances surrounding the unexplained death of an elderly man in the Carlow area on Friday morning.
They said: “Services from the Garda Technical Department and the State Pathologist’s Office have been requested.
“The autopsy will be conducted by the State Office of Pathologist, the results of which will determine the course of the investigation.
“There is no further information available at this time.”
Irish TV station RTE reported that earlier in the day, a man called the post office on Staplestown Road and asked to receive benefits on behalf of an elderly man.
That request was denied because the employee told him the pensioner must be present to pay.
A short time later, the two men returned with a man in his 60s who was “collapsed” in the post office.
