CAPE CORAL, Fla. – Neighbors in the Southeast Cape Coral neighborhood are concerned about a planned car wash between Kamal Parkway and SE 28th Terrace.
Rose Thom and others who live in the area believe the new owners of the lot could significantly alter the end of the Mast Canal to make more room for Tommy’s Express Carwash “80 feet of which is what they want.” fill in and make room for this car wash…” she said.
Thom believes that backfilling at the end of the canal could drive wildlife such as manatees, birds, dolphins and turtles away. “Unfortunately, once they start that project, they won’t come here anymore, and then all the canals and water will be ruined,” she said.
Land records show “Sundream Inc.” purchased the property in January 2022. Neighbors reported that just a few days later, a sign reading “Tommy’s Express Carwash Coming Soon” appeared.
The property’s former owner got permission in 2016 to fill the channel. But the South Florida Water District said the permit has yet to be passed on to its new owner.
NBC2 has reached out to Tommy’s Express Carwash for comment, but has not yet received a response.
